Infrastructure

What is Infrastructure?

Infrastructure refers to the underlying foundation of a system. The infrastructure is the composite pieces that make up the structure of an organization.

Every great undertaking has good infrastructure. A sturdy house is built on solid foundations. However, infrastructure can be more than physical assets.

What do I need to know about Infrastructure?

Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) refers to cloud-based services that provide APIs that take the place of physical resources. Hypervisors like Xen, Oracle VirtualBox, Oracle VM, KVM, VMware ESX/ESXi, or Hyper-V, LXD run these virtual machines as guests. Within the cloud operational system, groups of hypervisors support a large number of virtual machines and scale service levels according to the needs of their customers. These virtual machines take the place of underlying networks infrastructure around location, data partition, scaling, backup and security, and more.

The consumer is not responsible for managing the underlying cloud infrastructure, but has the power to control operating systems, deployed applications, and storage (and, perhaps, some networking components such as firewalls). The consumer can deploy and run software (including OS and apps) while provisioning processing, storage, networks and other important resources.
