A Windows Virtual Desktop tenant is the cornerstone of your company’s virtual desktop infrastructure. In virtualization solutions, a tenant is a group of one or more host pools, each consisting of multiple session hosts running as virtual machines in Microsoft Azure. These host pools also contain app groups that publish remote desktops and other remote application resources to users. Tenants give you control over these host pools, allowing you to create app groups, assign users, and make connections through your Windows Virtual Desktop service. As such, learning how to create a WVD tenant is essential to running your virtual desktop solution. Follow these steps to set up your Windows Virtual Desktop tenant.
Grant Permissions to Windows Virtual Desktop
Before you create your tenant, you must give Azure Active Directory permissions to the Windows Virtual Desktop service. This step lets your WVD service query the directory for administrative and end-user actions. To do this, open the WVD consent page in a browser and sign in with a global administrator account. Choose the server app first, and accept the permissions for the WVD app. Wait one minute for the Azure Active Directory to register and record the consent. Once you’ve accepted permissions for the server app, repeat this process for the Windows Virtual Desktop client app.
Assign the TenantCreator Role to a User
Once you’ve assigned permissions, you need a TenantCreator application role. This role allows a certified user to create a WVD tenant associated with the Azure Active Directory instance. In the Azure portal, find and select Enterprise applications. Here you’ll find the two apps—server and client—that you gave permissions to in the previous step. Select the server app, labeled Windows Virtual Desktop, then select Users and groups. Click Add User and look at the Add Assignment tab. Here, select Users and groups. From here, you can search for a user account—such as your global administrator account—to create your WVD tenant. You might also want to choose more than one user in case you can’t access the primary TenantCreator account for any reason (such as that person being absent for the day). Once you’ve selected the appropriate account or accounts, click Assign. Go back to the Windows Virtual Desktop – Users and groups page, and verify the new TenantCreator role listed there.
Create a Windows Virtual Desktop Tenant
The next step in creating a WVD tenant is to obtain your Azure Directory tenant ID and your Azure subscription ID from the Azure portal. Once you have this information, you can create the tenant in a PowerShell prompt in Windows 10. Download and import the Windows Virtual Desktop PowerShell module. From here, you can sign into WVD using the TenantCreator account. Once you authenticate the account, you’ll be able to use PowerShell commands to create a tenant.
